SERIAL FLASH MEMORY SOLUTIONS
Datakey serial memory products make it easy to add robust, portable memory to your embedded device. We use industry-standard serial EEPROM and serial flash memory to simplify integration, reduce time-to-market and virtually eliminate obsolescence concerns.
The Serial Memory line features portable memory products utilising industry-standard EEPROM and NOR flash memories. Choose from capacities of 1 Kbit to 64 Mbits and serial interfaces including SPI, I2C and Microwire. Datakey products are available in several form-factors, including the iconic key-shaped design and the newest option, the Bar—our most robust portable memory system.
SPI FLASH MEMORY
While all of the Serial Memory form factors are available with Microwire, I2C and SPI serial interfaces, only SPI has the advantage of supporting both EEPROM and NOR flash devices. Many of our OEM customers who utilised a lower-capacity EEPROM device were able to also use a larger NOR flash device as a way of updating the system’s firmware. Since the receptacle was already in the design, it was like they got firmware updates “for free”!
LONG-TERM AVAILABILITY
Unlike USB flash drives and SD cards that have short product life cycles, the Serial Memory line uses industry-standard serial EEPROM and serial NOR Flash memory. These memory technologies have extremely long product life cycles, especially when compared to the NAND Flash memory used in consumer products.

Slimline Memory Token
Leveraging industry-standard serial EEPROM and NOR flash memory, Datakey offers tokens with SPI, I2C or Microwire interfaces and capacities from 1 Kb to 64 Mb. The tokens feature:
- Ultra-rugged Construction – SlimLineTM tokens are solid over-moulded using a durable composite, making them impervious to liquids and virtually crush-proof.
- Redundant Contacts – With contacts on both sides of the memory token it is impossible to insert it “upside-down.”
- Branding Options – The tokens are available in six standard colors and come in standard and extended lengths. The extended length token can be OEM-branded with a moulded logo.

Slimlink Programmers
- It is often desired to use a PC to read data from or write data to a memory token. The SlimLink programmers support all of the Serial Memory tokens and connect to a PC via a USB or RS-232 port. The programmers come with Windows® drivers and a sample application. The sample application can be used for troubleshooting when integrating a memory token into an embedded design, as it provides a known-good way to communicate with the memory device. For those who wish to develop their own Windows® applications, we offer a development kit with all of the necessary tools, including the programmer.

Bar Memory Tokens
Leveraging industry-standard serial EEPROM memory, Datakey offers Bar tokens with SPI, 12C or Microwire interfaces and capacities from 1 Kb to 256 Kb. The tokens feature:
- Ultra-rugged Construction – Bar memory tokens are solid over-moulded using a durable composite, making them impervious to liquids and virtually crush-proof.
- MIL-STD-810 Tested – Bar memory tokens have been tested to MIL-STD-810F standards for immersion, salt-fog, freezing rain, altitude, solar radiation and more.
- Writable Label – Bar memory tokens come standard with a white, writable label.
Bar Receptacles
Bar receptacles mount to the surface of an enclosure with only the contact pins extending inside. This greatly reduces the volume required inside the enclosure. Additional features include:
- IP67 Rating – All Bar receptacles have an IP67 rating and can be supplied with or without a pre-installed adhesive gasket. The design also minimises radiated emissions.
- MIL-STD-810 Tested – Bar receptacles have been tested to MIL-STD-810F standards (with and without mated Bar tokens) for shock, vibration, immersion, salt-fog, blowing dust & sand, freezing rain, altitude, solar radiation and more.
- Open Design – The open design of the Bar receptacles allow for easy in-field cleaning. The contact system employs a wiping mechanism to clear any material with each insertion.
